On again, at least for 90 days, is funding for the Texas Racing Commission following an agreement between House Appropriations Chairman John Otto and Senate members of the Legislative Budget Board according to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s announcement late Tuesday, September 1.

Tracks reopened the day after, according to Selma, Texas’ Retama Park.

The one-day shutdown of operations by the commission on Tuesday due to legislative arguments over funding forced dog and horse racing tracks to stop taking bets on real-time races.

Texas lawmakers opposed to the Commission’s recent decision to allow tracks to install “historical racing” terminals responded by threatening to withhold funding. The new installs allow wagering on previously run races that have been voided of all identifying information. Lawmakers claim by expanding gambling in the state the Commission exceeded its reach.
